Parish history
A community united in faith
Summary of the parish’s anniversary brochure “30 years”. The original is in Romanian and German; this English version is a translation of the summary.
The beginnings
The brochure records accounts of the first Romanian Orthodox believers in Saarland in the 1950s, including merchants. It explicitly notes that some accounts cannot be verified or have not yet been checked. The early community’s precise founding date therefore remains uncertain.
Parish organisation
The brochure describes a division in the community. Some believers and their pastor came under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Others, with Patriarch Teoctist’s blessing, entered the jurisdiction of the Romanian Patriarchate and organised under the name “Nativity of the Mother of God”.
1994–2010 · Father Mircea Coșofreț-Zmeu
Father Mircea Coșofreț-Zmeu served the parish as a missionary priest, travelling to Saarbrücken once a month, first from Belgium and later from Luxembourg. Worship took place at several locations, including St Canisius Chapel in Saarlouis and St Eligius Church in Saarbrücken-Burbach.
2009 · A permanent place of worship
Local authorities made the former community centre in Burbach available as a permanent place of worship. Parishioners helped adapt the building for church services.
2010–2023 · Father Constantin Papuc
Following Father Coșofreț’s retirement, Archbishop Serafim appointed Father Constantin Papuc as parish priest in response to the community’s wish for a resident priest. The brochure recalls his spiritual and administrative work, supported by churchwarden Vasile Alfred Spisländer, who was later ordained a deacon.
1 July 2017 · Foundation stone
The brochure highlights the laying of the foundation stone for a wooden church in Saarbrücken on 1 July 2017.
19 March 2023 · Installation of the new parish priest
After Patriarch Daniel called Father Constantin Papuc to serve in Bucharest, Father Agache Andrei Gabriel was appointed to Saarbrücken. Archbishop Serafim installed him on 19 March 2023.
Gratitude and continuity
The brochure closes with gratitude to everyone who helped build and strengthen the community, keeping the faith alive and providing a place of prayer and fellowship for Romanian believers in this part of Germany.
